Introducing the Google Chrome OS

It’s been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.

We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don’t want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates. And any time our users have a better computing experience, Google benefits as well by having happier users who are more likely to spend time on the Internet.

We have a lot of work to do, and we’re definitely going to need a lot of help from the open source community to accomplish this vision. We’re excited for what’s to come and we hope you are too. Stay tuned for more updates in the fall and have a great summer.

How To Download & Watch Free Movies & Video Online

Even as little as seven years ago, trying to obtain video on the Internet, much less watching a movie, was a complete nightmare. With much of the Internet still on dialup, it could take hours to download even a three minute music video, days for a feature-length film.

Furthermore, the video-watching experience was hampered by a kludge of competing codecs and video players, largely driven by competition from Apple, Microsoft and Real. This meant that, even if you had the patience or fast enough connection to download a video of any size, there was no guarantee that it would work.

However, in 2004 that began to change. With the release of Flash Professional MX 2004, the FLV file became a standard and, for the first time, high-quality video could be streamed using the Flash plugin. Since nearly all surfers had Flash, it meant that video could be streamed seamlessly in Web sites without any codec or video player issues.

This, combined with the widespread adoption of broadband, paved the way for streaming video to enter the mainstream and for sites such as YouTube, Veoh and Vimeo to blossom.

However, most of the major video sites specialize in the streaming of short clips, less than 20 minutes in length. Those wanting to watch full movies are often disappointed. The good news is that, as the Web has grown, more and more places have sprung up to help you watch full movies on the Web for free. Furthermore, there are still many of the pre-FLV solutions available to help you download and save movies to your computer.

So where can you find full movies to watch? Here are just some of the places:

Free Movie Sites

The pinnacle of the online movie experience is finding full-length movies available for streaming. Thus making the movies available instantly, anywhere with no software needed to install and no cost to the consumer. Though it sounds like a dream come true, there are actually a few sites that are making it happen right now.

Hulu
Hulu is a joint venture of NBC and News Corp (the owners of Fox). Though the site is primarily focused on television shows, it also has a strong library of popular movies for free streaming. The site is ad supported but the resolution and streaming quality, for the most part, is good.

The Web Archive
For older movies, the Web Archive has a collection of public domain and freely-licensed movies available for download in a variety of resolutions. The videos range wildly in terms of content and and length. If you wish, with most of this films, you are free to edit it and incorporate it into works of your own.

Fancast
This Comcast-owned site has hundreds for free movies available to watch instantly pulled from a variety of sources. Though many of the films come from Hulu, see above, they have others from previous decades, including obscure ones, that they host and provide exclusively there. Films on this site are ad-supported.

Joost
Much like Hulu and Fancast, Joost is a free video streaming site but it works with a different set of content partners. It boasts a large collection of freely-streamed movies as well as TV shows and other content, all uploaded by content creators. Also as with others on this list, this site is ad-supported.

Boxee
Though not a video provider itself, Boxee has partnered with several other sites, to make it easier to get streaming programs from your computer to your TV. Boxee makes it so that you don’t have to mess with the Web sites the content is on to watch the videos and can easily select interesting content with a remote from across the room.

The drawback to all of these free sites is that the movie selection, compared to the total number of movies released, is fairly limited. Though sites such as Hulu can provide hundreds of full movies, there are many hundreds of times that many available on other sites.

Paid Movie Sites

For a much better selection of legal movies on demand, one typically has to be willing to open their wallet. The good news is that, with the Web, the cost of watching movies has dropped to nearly nothing, making it one of the cheapest ways to get an evening’s entertainment.

Here are some sites to consider when looking to stream or “rent” a movie online:

Netflix
Netflix is best-known for its rent-by-mail DVD business, however, the company also provides a “Watch it Now” service that lets its subscribers watch 10s of thousands of movies for free online. The service comes with any account and provides with an unlimited amount of viewing time. The drawback is that the streaming requires Windows to function.

Blockbuster
Not to be outdone, bricks-and-mortar video rental store Blockbuster has not only added a DVD-by-mail service, but also the ability to rent movies online. Movie rentals through Blockbuster cost around four dollars per rental and are viewable for up to one month after download and 24 hours after pressing “Play”. Once again, the site requires Internet Explorer and Windows to operate. You can also choose to download movies to keep.

iTunes
Though iTunes is technically an application, it works like a Web site, allowing you to download and rent movies. Movie rentals range from $1-$4 and has a similar viewing time to movies on Blockbuster, 30 days from download or 24 hours from when you first press “Play”.

Amazon
Amazon also has launched a video on demand service that works very similar to iTunes both in price, selection and function. Amazon’s service lets you rent movies for $1-$4 and then view them within the allotted time. Amazon heavily promotes low-cost rentals, including older and obscure titles. Works on both Windows and Mac.

BigStar.tv
For fans in independent cinema, BigStar.TV provides an iTunes-like interface and the chance to rent or purchase thousands of independent user-submitted films. Films cost only a few dollars to rent and can usually be purchased for just a few more. Most of the films come without any DRM, meaning they should play on nearly all computers.

In short, by using a paid site, you not only get a much wider selection of movies to choose from, but the quality of the video, especially the resolution, improves drastically and you aren’t subjected to advertisements. In many cases, it is well worth the few dollars to rent the movie rather than trying to stream it for free.

Peer-to-Peer

Before Web-based streaming became popular or widely available, peer-to-peer (abbreviated P2P) was the most common way to download movies. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer-to-peer]P2P is a generic term for a file sharing network that works by connecting peers, or users, directly with other peers. These networks have no centralized server and access to them requires a client application.

Some of the more popular client applications include the following:

Limewire
Limewire is the best-known and most popular of the file sharing apps. It’s 5th version brings in a slew of new features including a new interface, drill-down menus, the ability to share files directly with friends and CC integration to help you find free, legal content. It is available for both Mac and Windows and there is both a free and pro version of the product.

eMule
Though more stripped down than Limewire in terms of interface, eMule offers a great deal of power under the hood including the ability to share files across multiple networks, advanced statistics and a price tag of completely free. It has become a very popular client among those that prefer the eDonkey network.

Frostwire
Frostwire was created to be a free, open source alternative to Limewire. It touts itself as being faster, cleaner and adds the ability to download Bittorrent files. It even has the ability to apply new skins to itself to change its look. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

DC++
DC++ stands for Direct Connect ++, it is an open source file sharing application that runs on the Direct Connect network. It is a bare bones application that offers a standard set of features and is a favorite among some file sharers for movie or other large files. DC++, at this time, is only available for Windows.

KCeasy
KCeasy is a Windows-only file sharing applicaiton that uses giFT as it’s backend, this allows it to connect to multiple networks including Gnutella, Ares and OpenFT. Development seems to have largely stopped on this application at this time, however, it may be due to issues with the networks themselves.

Over all though, traditional P2P file sharing is quickly becoming a thing of the past. The evolution of more efficient systems and action by ISPs to throttle down such transfers has made most P2P networks relative dead zones. Instead, most of what was traditional P2P has moved on to Bittorrent.

Bittorrent

Over the past few years, Bittorrent has become the de facto standard for file sharing, especially of large files, such as movies.

Unlike the applications and networks mentioned above, Bittorrent works through trackers, or central servers, that monitor the file transfers. To share a file, a user would use a bittorrent client to create a small file known as a “torrent” that is uploaded to a server. The torrent file contains information about the file and the tracker that is to be used. Other clients then access the torrent file and, from there, visit the tracker and, through that, start downloading the file.

As users download the file, they are also uploading to other downloaders. The one offering the file is a “seeder” the ones downloading it are “peers” and peers that don’t upload back are known as “leechers”. The result is that Bittorrent can move a large amount of data quickly with no one user bearing a large upload cost.

There are many Bittorrent clients available, including the following:

Bittorrent
Bittorrent is the official Bittorrent client of the Bittorrent corporation, the developers of the protocol. Though it is held in high regard it is not the most popular of the clients. Still, it is something of a standards bearer in the field, and a solid choie for beginners and will likely be the first to receive any innovations in the protocol.

UTorrent
uTorrent is known for being “micro-sized” and still very powerful and flexible. It prides itself on needing the least amount of resources to operate and still having a robust feature set including download management, throttling and more. Another great client for learning what Bittorrent is about.

Vuze
Vuze goes the opposite direction of uTorrent and Bittorrent, though it is a Bittorrent client at heart, it also allows users to download and stream HD content from Vuze’s own network. It also has a built-in media player that lets you watch movies and listen to songs right in the program itself.

Bitcomet
Bitcomet is an older but still very popular Bittorrent client that lets you download bittorrents “up to 5-10 times faster” than other clients and even has the ability to preview certain media types as they are being downloaded. Bitcoment also claims to have caching features that makes it easier on your harddrive.

Bitlord
Bitlord is a fairly standard Bittorrent client but makes itself stand out through an integrated Bittorrent search engine that lets you find torrent files without having to surf the Web or visit 3rd party sites. Bitlord offers a pro version for faster downloading but the free version comes with no spyware/adware.

Due to the nature of Bittorrent, streaming of video or audio is not available at this time. Since Bittorrent downloads its files out of order, there is no way to easily stream a file being download (though you can, as with Bitcomet, preview the downloaded portions).

A Word of Caution

It is worth noting that, while there is a large amount of legal content available over both P2P and Bittorrent networks, there is also a large amount of material that, downloading, would constitute a copyright infringement. Rights holders are being very aggressive about protecting their rights and are, in many cases, targeting those who share files. Though the odds of getting caught are slim, it is well advised to locate legal torrents and files to download.

Gratis antivirus er best – Antivir fra Avira slår alle betallingsløsningene

Det er gode grunner til å installere et antivirusprogram på PC-en din, som oppdaterer seg selv og som også stopper andre trusler enn virus og ormer. De fleste som kjøper ny PC i dag får ett eller annet prøveabonnement med på kjøpet, som slutter å oppdatere seg etter at prøveperioden er over. Da må du ut med penger for å få videre sikring.

Men det er ikke sikkert at det behøver å være noen dårlig ide å kaste ut det medfølgende prøveprogrammet med et helt gratis alternativ. Det finnes mange å velge mellom, og noen av dem er faktisk like flink eller flinkere til å avsløre og stoppe ondsinnet kode enn programmene som koster penger.

Antivir er best

Det er i hvert fall hva testerne hos den uavhengige organisasjonen AV-comparatives.org har kommet frem til gjennom flere år med analyse og testing av antivirusprogrammer. Aller best ut kommer gratisprogrammet Antivir fra Avira, som skal være i stand til å avsløre hele 99,7% av alle truslene, i følge organisasjonen.

Gratisversjonen av Antivir stopper også spyware, men mangler imidlertid støtte for virussøk i epost. Det behøver ikke å bety så mye, for den vil uansett stoppe forsøk på åpne infiserte vedlegg.

Gratisversjonen har også et litt irriterende vedheng, nemlig en reklame som popper opp hver gang virusdefinisjonene er oppdatert, men dette kan i følge vår kilde Freeware-genius enkelt fjernes.

What is 0-Day? (0Day)

“0-day” is a term used in the Warez-scene to describe the releases by all the cracking/warez/release groups on that particular day. These releases are moved around the world to 0-day dump-sites (FTPs) by “couriers” for the various groups. Some dump-sites also connect to other dump-sites via FXP, using server to server transfer, and keep each-other “synched”) so that these dump-sites can have as nearly complete a feed of the day’s releases as possible.

0-day warez are posted exactly as released by the release groups. The zips are not altered in any way, except that some posters/sites remove extraneous “nfo” files that are put into the zips by some sites or couriers. This can help to hide the path the files took to the dump-sites which are supplying the warez that is being posted.

One of the beauties of 0-day warez being posted (and archived) in this fashion is that it is possible to get a fill at some distant time in the future from a ‘careful archivist’. (See “Saving and preserving posts” for how to do this. Ed.) For example: If you have the March 15th 2003 Paradox release of ‘such-and-such’ archived to CD, and your hard disk crashes, so that you lost the installed app- then you went to CD and found that one of the zips had “gone-bad”, you could be screwed– except that since you had the original archives and know their specifics, you can go and ask on Usenet or IRC for the specific zip by name from that particular release. Someone will likely have it, and you can restore your system. If you pull the RARs and delete the zips you have almost certainly lost your chance to restore, and will have to search-out the entire application again.

Some dump-sites are better served by couriers than others, but these are also more exposed and vulnerable to be taken down by “anti-evaluation forces” who don’t want people to fully test the software, usually because it doesn’t really work. (Once you break the shrink-wrap it’s yours– they have your money and there’s not a thing you can do about it if the software doesn’t perform as advertised. And that is exactly the way the software dragons and their “bought-and-paid-for” legislators mean to keep it!)

A 0-day site is organized by date. Everything the courier has that was released on April 15th, for example, s/he will deposit in a directory on the dump-site named 0415 (mmdd)- creating a sub-directory for it with the name and version # and release group name, such as:

This is to make it simple for the site-operator and other couriers to see what has been delivered. Very often a particular release will be brought to a site by different couriers on different days, so 0414 and 0415 might both contain the same release. No biggie.

People with 0-day “access” are allowed onto these 0-day dump-sites to both upload and download warez. This warez very quickly finds it way to places other than the regular dump-sites: Web pages, private FTPs, IRC, etc. One of the places it ends-up is Usenet. People with 0-day access (very often group couriers themselves) will post some of the material to Usenet. This is new material that no one has had an opportunity to test yet, least of all the poster who probably only just looked on the dump-site, saw an “interesting-looking” application name, grabbed it and posted it, with few or no checks at all.

Prolific posters who do this on a regular basis may grab dozens of applications to post daily. They have no time to check them, except perhaps to virus scan them. Many times they are taken and posted based solely on the application’s name. Typically the poster hasn’t got a clue as to the workings of the application, the crack, or anything else about the application.

Such posters are acting as couriers, moving the material from the dump-sites to Usenet- they have no chance to do anything with it. The 0-day material stays on the dump-site for a limited time (depending on the storage and daily volume of the site) – and on the poster’s drives for a limited time. They post most or all of what they get, when they get it. After it’s posted it’s either deleted or burned to CD or DVD, or whatever other long-term storage the poster may have.

Asking such posters for specific applications is highly unlikely to produce a positive result. Generally speaking, if they get it, they post it when they get it. So asking for something in a 0-day group, or of a 0-day poster, is usually a waste of time. But go ahead and ask if you think, or know, that an application was recently released. Many posters have taken more than they have uploaded to Usenet (bandwidth there being a major consideration- and time to prepare and post) and may have what you’re looking for on their hard drive.

Asking a “0-day” poster for an application you know was released 6 weeks ago or more, for example, is most likely a waste of time. Chances are very slim that he/she even remembers it, much less still has it. But you never know, and someone else might see the request and fill it for you. But such requests are best made to non-0-day groups, and non-0-day posters, for the reasons mentioned. No reason to ruffle people’s feathers with such “off-topic” requests, especially when they will have a much better chance of being filled someplace else, where they would be “on-topic.”

If you’ve checked and made sure your post is “0-day” material as described above, and your archive is packaged properly for archiving on 0-day FTPs (that means, original zips with FILE_ID.DIZ and NFO files in each zip), and you have successfully made multi-part binary posts before, then go right ahead and post. Q: Can I post 0-day warez I got from someplace other than UseNet?

A: Absolutely. But unless you got the files from the release group directly or from a release group drop site, please check the files first, before you post them, and make sure they are complete, and aren’t corrupt.

Q: Is it OK to make requests for things I haven’t seen posted?

A: Of course. But if you have read the <What is 0-day> section, you already know that making a request in abwi0 isn’t as likely to produce results as it might be in other groups. 0-day posters tend to post what they get, when they get it. Also, they tend to post mainly what has very recently been obtained from drop sites. But, if you don’t recall seeing the release posted to UseNet before, or you know the release is very new, or you specifically want original release group zips, go ahead and ask, you could luck out!

Q: How do I post or request a fill?

A: Same way as you would in any other binary newsgroup. Contrary to what some may claim, there is no special “fills group” for abwi0, although some posters may prefer posting their fills somewhere else, in order to keep abwi0 as “clean” as possible for new files only. Generally speaking, however, fills and reposts of files originally posted to abwi0, belong in abwi0, just as fills and reposts of material posted to other newsgroups belong in the newsgroup where the material was posted.

To post a fill in abwi0 you follow the same procedures as would for anywhere else. First, give the original poster a chance to respond to the request for the fill; if he doesn’t respond, or responds unfavorably, and you have the exact file requested, in unaltered form, go right ahead and post the fill in abwi0.

Before requesting a fill in abwi0, please first try to complete the file on your own by following the procedures outlined in the WarezFAQ. If that doesn’t produce results, then simply make a post in abwi0 REQuesting your fill. Note however that individual posters have their own fill policies which they usually state. If you want that poster to fill your request, it is only polite to observe their fill policy- i.e. “No requests for fills before two days.”, etc.

Q: Is it OK to cross-post?

A: Sure, that decision is entirely up to you. One especially good reason to consider cross-posting is because abwi0 is not as widely-propagated among UseNet providers as some other newsgroups. Cross-posting your material into another appropriate, and well-propagated group, (such as alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc) will enable many more people to see and download your post. Excessive cross-posting however, (called ECP) is frowned upon by both ISPs and NSPs. Make sure that the group(s) to which you cross-post are appropriate for the material of the post, and that the number of groups to which you cross-post is within the cross-post limit of your news server.

Q: Are there any other UseNet newsgroups devoted to “0-day” material?

A: Yes. alt.binaries.warez.0-day.games is devoted to 0-day game releases exclusively, and it is frequently busy. If your provider carries it, alt.binaries.warez.0-day is yet another 0-day newsgroup. Like abwi0, alt.binaries.warez.0-day fluctuates between being busy and being empty, but the rewards can be great if you visit at the right time—both applications and games are posted there. alt.binaries.warez.win95-apps frequently has a good selection of just-released (0-day) applications as well.
Q: Why do I see other “FAQs” for this newsgroup?

A: Anyone can make a FAQ for any unmoderated newsgroup at any time. If you see a FAQ other than this one, either posted or on some other site, that FAQ represents the views of the person who wrote it and/or is hosting it, as to which questions are most frequently asked, and his or her belief as to the correct answers.

Sometimes FAQ’s are written by kooks or trolls, and serve to confuse and confound people more than to help answer their legitimate questions. Consider them UseNet “color”, and simply disregard anything which seems strange or unusual to you. All the FAQs linked-to on this site: warezfaq.com are legitimate FAQs written by UseNet veterans who are responsive to the concerns of the group’s users- all of the group’s users.
File types:

Archive Files
RAR:

RARs are identified by the extensions:
RAR: either the first of an R##-Z## set, or the standard extension for all RAR archives starting with version 3.0 of WinRAR.
R00-Z99: The extensions of RAR archive files that begin with an .RAR file.
001-999: Alternate all-numeric numbering system preferred by many release groups. The 001-file corresponds to the *.RAR file, or the part001.RAR file of the newer naming convention. Some file-splitting applications also use this form of numeric extension, but such file-splitting programs are not used in the warez or cd-image groups (including the video cd/dvd image groups.)
REV: Starting with WinRAR v3.0, REV stands for “REcovery Volume”, it is a parity-volume file which can be used to recover missing or (starting with WinRAR v 3.1,) damaged archive volumes. See the section on Parity files for <more-info>

To use RARs you should use WinRAR, obtainable from the authors at http://www.rarlabs.com/ WinRAR is well-tested and has been proven stable in release versions 2.9 and 3.1, 3.2 and beyond. Version 3.0 didn’t have the ability to repair damaged archives with REV files, although it could replace missing ones! 2.9 didn’t have the ability to use REV files at all, so the staff at the WarezFAQ recommends you get at least v3.1. WinRAR also has the ability to create a self-extracting-executable, as an .EXE file. These are generally not recommended for UseNet, as people are very leery of executable files, and some have filters in place to prevent them from being seen or downloaded.

ZIP:

Zips are readily identified by any extension beginning with the letter “Z”. While there are other applications that use files beginning with “Z”, they aren’t discussed here because their use in binary UseNet is negligible.

Common zip file extensions:
ZIP: by far the most common.
Z and GZ: used by Unix-based zippers, but a standard “ZIP” none-the-less.
Z00-ZZZ: used by WinZIP v8.1 or later, to indicate sequential volumes in an archive set.

Non-sequential zips are handled routinely by any standard “ZIP-capable” application, with WinZip being by far the most popular. WinRAR also handles them quite well. Sequential zip volumes are a feature of WinZip v8.1 or later, and should be handled by that application or WinRAR. WinZip is obtainable from the authors at http://www.winzip.com/ It is extremely stable.

Mass unzipping of a release is easily done by a number of applications such as “Unziplify” or WinRAR or WinZip 8.1 or later.

ACE:

ACE files typically have the extension series .ACE .C00 .C01..C99, etc. They can be handled by WinACE, or by WinRAR. ACE is little used in the applications groups, but remains common among the game groups. Overall compression is inferior to WinRAR 3.1 and later, but the format remains popular among the gamers nonetheless.

Handling is otherwise identical to RAR archives. WinACE can be obtained at http://www.winace.com/

UHA:

UHA or UHarc, is another archive compression algorithm. It is extremely efficient, often achieving greater compression than any other algorithm (RAR, ZIP, ACE, etc.) but is not much used in the binary groups on UseNet because implementations of it tend to be quite a bit slower than RAR, without offering sufficient improvement in compression to justify the additional CPU-time needed to compress or decompress an archive, and there is no convenient archive-splitting as there is with WinRAR. When size considerations are of paramount importance UHarc should be considered as the primary compressor. The resulting single archive can be split and encapsulated in RARs by WinRAR with no additional compression, gaining the benefit of extreme compression and convenient file sizes.

As UHA program binaries can come from multiple sources, no one particular version is linked-to here, rather we recommend you web-search on “UHA+compression”, which should yield some links to current implementations. UHA implementations tend to be freeware. At this writing (June 2006) a nice implementation called WinUHA is available in beta and RC versions as “donation ware”.

Support Files:
PAR

PAR = Parity ARchive and represents an attempt at implementing RAID-5-type Reed-Solomon redundancy for files, and not just hard drives. The idea is an offshoot of the Huffman ECC (Error Correcting Code) used to provide on-the-fly error correction for memory. In RAM, three (3) bits are used to provide an error-correcting code for an eight (8)-bit byte, and five (5) are needed for a 16-bit word, etc. That sort of ECC can correct errors of a single-bit per byte, and three bits per 16-bit word, and also adds the ability to notify the system on “some” errors of more than the specified number of incorrect bits. That algorithm is unsuitable for disk drives, but another algorithm named Reed-Solomon is very well suited to drives (and files). It is that algorithm which is used in PAR and PAR2.

The small PAR file itself is an index and can be used to verify that a downloaded file has the same CRC as it had on the original poster’s, computer. In the event of a mismatch, then you need one or more of the P## files (where # = 0-9) in the ratio of one P## file per missing or damaged RAR/ZIP file. The P## files themselves are the ones that contain the actual correction information. To use parity files you need a special program designed to deal with them. See <here> for a list of some programs, with download links.

PAR2

PAR2 is a different way of dealing with files which may be much larger than those commonly posted to the warez groups, such as an entire movie for example, in un-rared, un-split form. You would never make a 700MB PAR file to provide error correction for a 700MB AVI, but you can use PAR2 to make some smaller files, able to repair a number of damaged segments. The large files are “logically divided” into smaller segments of user-defined size, and PAR2 then proceeds to make a (user-defined) number of parity segments, which it then clusters into PAR2 files, according to a controllable order, i.e. first PAR2 file has one segment, the second has two, the third has four, the fourth has eight, etc. You define how many segments you think you will need over all, and cluster them into PAR2 files of varying size. Thus a user will be able to download only as many PAR2 files as contain the necessary number of segments needed to repair the downloaded files.

Imagine the 700MB AVI file being split by a splitter program into 1,400 files of 1/2 megabyte (500,000-byte) each, and making some PAR files for them. PAR2 does this without physically splitting the original files at all, but it does do so logically, and makes a number of PAR2 segments which it then clusters into PAR2 files of either the same or varying size (user-selectable.) A PAR2 file may contain any number of segments. Generally the programs that create PAR2 files do so with progressive sizes as a user-selectable option. Since you only need to download as many PAR2 segments as you have damaged segments in your downloaded file or file-set, the overhead is low. The PAR2 program (such as QuickPAR) will tell you how many segments you need to download to repair damaged or missing segments. PAR2 files are named in such a way that you can tell how many segments are contained in each one. You need merely download as many PAR2 files as will total the number of segments you need to repair/replace.

At this writing (September 2003) PAR2 is not used much in a.b.w* or its related groups yet, where individual file sizes tend to be small, but it is used quite a bit in the movie groups where 15 to 50 MB RAR files are common. It is more likely that you will only need some segments of a very-large RAR rather then all of them. You can “force download” the incomplete file with many newsreaders, Agent included. (With Agent, “join sections” – make sure they are in the correct order!) Download such PAR2 files as contain the same (or greater) number of segments that you need to repair the files you have downloaded, and let the PAR2 program work its magic.

“Parchive: Parity Archive Volume Set
The original idea behind this project was to provide a tool to apply the data-recovery capability concepts of RAID-like systems to the posting and recovery of multi-part archives on Usenet. We accomplished that goal. Our new goal with version 2.0 of the specification is to improve. It extends the idea of version 1.0 and takes the recovery process beyond the file-level barrier. This allows for more effective protection with less recovery data, and removes some previous limitations on the number of recoverable parts. See Par1 compared to Par2 for a more detailed view of the differences.

Because this new approach doesn’t benefit from like sized files, it drastically extends the potential applications of PAR. Files such as video, music, and other data can remain in a usable format and still have recovery data associated with them.

The technology is based on a ‘Reed-Solomon Code’ implementation that allows for recovery of any ‘X’ real data-blocks for ‘X’ parity data-blocks present. (Data-blocks referring to files OR much smaller virtual slices of files).

The key to this mission is a clean file format specification which provides all the necessary capabilities for programs to easily verify and regenerate single missing parts out of a set of data-blocks.

Current clients come in one of two flavors:
Those supporting v1.0 of the spec. (Currently extremely popular on Usenet).
And those adopting the v2.0 of the spec, touting all the benefits of this newer approach.
Only time will tell how Version 2.0 fares in the Usenet community, wish us luck. ”

Editors note: As of May, 2007 the Version 2.0 format, as embodied in QuickPAR, dominates the PAR formats in use on UseNet.
SFV

SFV is from “Simple File Verification” and is simply a CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check sum) for each file in the set. In simple terms an SFV is a text file that is used by specific programs to verify that what you downloaded is precisely the same as what was uploaded. It will tell you if any of the files in the archive set are missing or corrupt. It is very fast. See here for <more_info> The files are small, and quickly made and posted, using the appropriate client.

NFO

NFO = INFOrmation, and is a DOS-readable text file containing any information the release-group or poster believes is important. You can read it with Notepad or with any other text-reading program, but NFOs display best in a program designed specifically to read them, such as DAMN’s NFOVIEW. CD/DVD Image Files:

These files contain a complete “image” of a CD or a DVD. These are not ordinary data-files, but contain track and sector information, the CD/DVD-file system data, etc. These files require special handling, and special programs to deal with each data-type, although there are some programs that can very capably deal with a multitude of image-file types.

BIN

BIN = Binary file. It typically has a small text file with, with the extension .CUE. Both are needed to burn the CD-image contained in the BIN file. If you have a BIN without the CUE, you will need to make a CUE in order to burn the BIN. This is not as hard as it used to be, as it’s now automated. Just visit the Downloads page and get a copy of Lior Chen’s CueMaker program. It will read the format information from the BIN and write the CUE for you. Easy as eating pie.

ISO

ISO = International Standards Organization #9660. That is a document defining the precise standards for a particular file-system and format which is used in the creation of most data-CDs. ISO9660-compliant discs are cross-platform, having native support in Windows, Unix, SUNOS, Linux, BSD, and MAC Operating Systems, etc. No special hardware or software is needed to read CD’s that follow the ISO 9660 standard. An ISO file is similar to a BIN in mode 1, 2048 bytes per sector, no subcode or other positioning information is recorded, no ECC is used, and the standard ISO file-system is maintained.

NRG

NRG is a Nero Burning Rom image file. It’s a proprietary format, unique to Nero. Use either Nero or Alcohol 120% to burn it. An NRG file isn’t a standard file format, and really shouldn’t be posted to UseNet. The only standard, multi-program image files are ISO and BIN. Because all image burning programs can burn ISO, and almost all can burn BIN.

IMG

IMG/CCD is a Clone CD or Clone DVD image file. Clone CD was a product of Elaborate Bytes, a Swiss company, which has dropped support for CDs due to new copyright laws, only supporting DVD-writing software. You will occasionally run into an IMG file as a movie image, but very rarely will you find any warez posted that way any more. Alcohol 120% supports burning CCD images, which are essentially BIN files.

Other image file types:

There are as many image file types as there are programs used to burn CDs and DVDs. MDS/MDF is an Alcohol image file type, CIF is a format proprietary to Roxio’s burning programs, etc. The default DiscJuggler Image file extension is .CDI. None of the proprietary file types should really be posted to UseNet, as it forces people to obtain either the specific program which creates that image file, or to get one of the multi-file-type burning programs, such as Alcohol. Of the major applications, only Roxio applications can’t seem to manage to burn a BIN, and all can burn an ISO, so those are the preferred file types for images.

Miscellaneous Files:

NTX

An NTX is a yEnc-encoded file that was most probably uploaded to UseNet with a non-yEnc program. It was created by a program like yEnc32. It shouldn’t have been uploaded at all, and should be avoided, as obviously the person who uploaded it doesn’t know what he/she is doing. yEnc32 is a program that you can use to yEncode a file for test purposes, for example to check final file-size to see how many bytes will be uploaded. An NTX can be decoded using yDec (Q.V.) if you must have that particular file. It is a questionable practice to rely upon files posted by people who obviously do not know what they are doing. It rarely turns out well—just a word of advice.

NZB

An NZB is a “NewzBin” XML file (text) containing Message-ID’s. NZB files are created by some news posting programs, and the web site www.newzbin.com, and can be used by some newsreaders – notably NewsBin Pro- to get binary files without having to download a few zillion bytes of headers. Browse3D is an IE based browser interface that offers 3D style page navigation, that enables you to display up to 4 web page snapshots at the same time. The snaphots are not live, but clicking on one will bring the actual web page to the foreground. It takes some getting used to, but can improve navigation for those that usually keep multiple browser windows open at the same time. You can hold down the CTRL key when clicking on any link, and it will be added to on of the 4 window panels, allowing you to pick links and then preview and browse them. The program makes a nice toy browser, but has probably little real-world value for most, especially as it does not support live page displays (unless you purchase a Pro version). The toolbar icons appeared to very unstable during our review and disappeared frequently.

To upgrade from beta you need to:
- Extract the .iso contents to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive
or a directory on any partition on the machine running the old build).
- Browse to the sources directory.
- Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
- Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000.
- Save the file in place with the same name.
- Run setup.exe like you would normally and the version check will be bypassed.
